With such great weather this week, it made the kids strip away those winter layers and even kick off their shoes. This week was full of dirty feet and fresh nap-time air. When children attend Pebble Pond Preschool, they can choose to sleep inside our outside in our designated napping area in the shade. At first they were a little distracted by the wandering squirrel, the bright sun, and the outside noises of leaves rustling in the wind and birds chirping. But after about 10 minutes, their excitement of sleeping outside lost to their sleepiness. When they awoke, one student said, "Man, I feel so rested. That was some good sleep".
This week we were able to learn a little more about our slimy friend the worm (gusano). We talked about what worms eat, where they live, and what they looked like. When we had some indoor time we used art materials to decorate our gusanos. Teaching green habits to our students and having green practices at our school is very important to us at Pebble Pond Preschool. This is one of the reasons that we compost all of our food scraps. Everyday the children get the opportunity to feed the worms in our compost bin and love dumping our food scraps and giving them crunchy leaves we have raked up from the yard. Whenever we find a worm that is out and about, they are sure to relocate them to our vegetable garden or to the compost bin.
This was a great 1st week at Pebble Pond Preschool. We had some chilly weather and the children learned quickly about what proper shoes to wear, as on the first day their tennis shoes and socks were soaked from the morning dew. On the following days they made sure to wear their rain boots and warm jackets as it was a little colder. After they were properly dressed, no matter how cold or windy it was, they had a lot of fun playing in the outdoor classroom in the dirt and leaves and did not want to go back in.
Today was our first day with children at Pebble Pond Preschool and it was great. The air outside was perfect fall weather, cool and crisp. We had two students today and with such a small group, they were able to have more command over what they wanted to do that day. They started off with breakfast, which is always the best way to start your day. We had toast, peanut butter, and apple slices and they totally consumed everything that was on the table. We serve the meals family style, which helps children try new food and allows them to be in control of their eating. We also sit with them to model good eating habits.
